Holding My Breath

casio Sometimes it amazes me the things I have done. I must have been about 13 when breath holding became a game and a challenge. I used to run a bath at home, dive in and try to hold my breath as long as I can. I would have a Casio watch on my wrist to measure the passing time.

In the beginning I wasn't very good, holding my breath for a minute was difficult but over time I learned that I need to first calm down my mind and would spend about 5 minutes meditating, calming all my bodily functions before taking the plunge.

Today I read that Houdini's record was about 3 and 1/2 minutes.

The thing is I didn't know it, but when I was 15 I held my breath for about 3 minutes 12 seconds. Not that far off the great man.

I wonder if I had known then what I know now, if I would have persevered and tried to beat his record. I tried recently, and I was back to the old one minute. Years of bad habits and generally being inactive haven't helped me.

How amazing!

The world record is now is just over 8 minutes that makes my 3 minute attempt look juvenile, which it was.

But what if I had know then what I know now. Would I have tried to reach it?

I think so.
