About the book
Linked: The New Science of Networks by Albert-Laszlo Barabasi (2002) is the popular book that brought network science to a wide audience. Barabasi, a physicist, explains how complex networks, the web, social ties, cells, the economy, share deep structural patterns, most famously the scale-free distribution in which a few richly connected “hubs” dominate. He introduces the “rich get richer” mechanism behind such hubs and shows why it explains everything from the robustness of the internet to the spread of epidemics. A foundational read for my Networks notes.
