I close my eyes and I can see
A world that's waiting up for me
That I call my own
Through the dark, through the door
Through where no one's been before
But it feels like home

D Em C
They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy
They can say, they can say I've lost my mind
I don't care, I don't care, so call me crazy
We can live in a world that we design

G D/F# Am C
'Cause every night I lie in bed
The brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
I think of what the world could be
A vision of the one I see
A million dreams is all it's gonna take
A million dreams for the world we're gonna make

G D/F# Em C
There's a house we can build
Every room inside is filled
With things from far away
The special things I compile
Each one there to make you smile
On a rainy day

D/F# Em D C
They can say, they can say it all sounds crazy..
G D/F# Am C
Every night I lie in bed...

Em B G A C
However big, however small
Let me be part of it all
Share your dreams with me
 G D/F# B
You may be right, you may be wrong
But say that you'll bring me along
C G G Am D
To the world you see
To the world I close my eyes to see
I close my eyes to see

G D/F# Am C
Every night I lie in bed..

For the world we're gonna make

Learning the Fretboard

Wed, 27 Jul 2022 01:07:01 +0400

Learning the Fretboard

The Jazz Method for Learning the Fretboard

Know the Major Scale
Learn String by String
Play a chord then improvise on a single string. (C chord for example)
Then do with 2 strings at a time
Then change to simple other keys
Improvise blues on one string
Play tunes on one string
Then do on two adjacent strings
Then two non adjacent strings

The plain idea

The guitar fretboard looks like a grid of six strings and twenty-odd frets, over 120 positions in all, but it hides a simple logic: each fret is one semitone, and the notes repeat every twelve frets. Learn the notes on one string, learn how the strings relate, and the whole board unlocks. The jazz method above does it the musical way: one string at a time, always improvising, so you learn the notes by using them rather than memorising a chart.

 do di re ri mi fa fi so si la li ti do

 do ti te la le so se fa me me re ra do

 do di/ra re ri/me mi/fe fa fi/se so si/le l li/te ti/di do

di <-- do --> di

ra <-- re --> ri

me <-- mi

fe <-- fa --> fi

se <-- so --> si

te <-- ti

The plain idea

Solfège gives each note of the scale a singable syllable: do re mi fa so la ti do. Instead of naming notes by letter (C, D, E), you name them by their job in the key. In “movable do” solfège, do is always the home note, whatever key you’re in. In C major, do is C; in G major, do is G. The syllables above with changed vowels are the chromatic notes: going up, raised notes take an “i” (di, ri, fi, si, li); going down, lowered notes take an “e” or “a” (ra, me, se, le, te). So the chromatic scale up is do di re ri mi fa fi so si la li ti do, exactly as written at the top of this page.

Guitar Chords

Guitar | Open Chords | Triads | Learn the Fretboard | Chord Progressions

The core idea in plain words

A chord is three or more notes sounded together. On guitar, a chord shape is simply a way of holding down strings so that every string you strum plays one of those notes.

The recipe for the basic chords is short:

Major chord = root + major 3rd + perfect 5th (scale degrees 1–3–5). Bright, settled.
Minor chord = root + minor 3rd + perfect 5th (1–♭3–5). Darker, sadder.
Dominant 7th = major chord + minor 7th (1–3–5–♭7). Tense; wants to resolve.
Major 7th = major chord + major 7th (1–3–5–7). Dreamy, jazzy.
Minor 7th = minor chord + minor 7th (1–♭3–5–♭7). Mellow.
sus2 / sus4 = replace the 3rd with the 2nd or 4th. Neither major nor minor — open and floating.

If you know which notes are in a chord, you can check any shape yourself: name the note on each string and see if it’s in the recipe. See Triads and The Musical Alphabet for where the recipe comes from.

You will do well to go to https://www.playmoresongs.com or Amazon to purchase the book. Here are some of my notes taken about the system:

Play to Music, forget metronomes, etc…
Forget Perfection
Bring the Music to your skill proficiency, not you to the music.
Program new habits into your life
- Match the Guitar to match your life, not your life to the guitar
- Practice everyday using the minimum effective dose (Arthur Jones)
- 5 mins a day is enough.
- Try the same time everyday. Then after some time, build up more time. Which is a total option.
Create games you are guaranteed to win
Prepractice
- Get the lyrics, figure out the key and chords in the song.

The Alphabet

Notice the symmetries. Seconds are Sevenths reversed. Thirds vs Sixths & Fourths vs Fifths. Learn all the alphabets. The thirds will give you access to all chord theory. The fourths and fifths to progressions. The others to extensions.

A B C D E F G A B C D E F G A (Seconds)
A C E G B D F A C E G B D F A (Thirds)
A D G C F B E A D G C F B E A (Fourths
A E B F C G D A E B F C G A E (Fifths)

The plain idea

A scale is a ladder of notes, in order, that a melody climbs up and down. Out of the twelve notes available, a scale picks a handful and arranges them around a home note. The major scale (Ionian) uses the step pattern W W H W W W H, where W is a whole step (two frets) and H is a half step (one fret). Everything above is a variation on that one ladder.

A correction first

The first two lines above are right: the D major scale is D E F♯ G A B C♯ D, and the D major chord is D F♯ A. The lines after that were meant to be the chords of the key but several are wrong (D major has no F, C or G♯). Here are the correct seven chords, each built by stacking alternate notes of the scale:

(The list above was my first attempt at the chords of D major, and several lines are wrong. The D major page has the corrected chords: D, Em, F♯m, G, A, Bm, C♯dim.)

Amazing Grace

I am still learning this simple song. I really do love singing it though :-)

Timing 3/4

 D G D
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
 A7
That saved a wretch like me!
 D G D
I once was lost, but now am found;
 A7 D
Was blind, but now I see.

 D G D
’Twas grace that taught my eyes to see,
 A7
And grace my fears relieved;
 D G D
How precious did that grace appear
 A7 D
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,

I have already come;

’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,

His Word my hope secures;

He will my Shield and Portion be,

As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,

And mortal life shall cease,

I shall possess, within the veil,

A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,

The sun forbear to shine;

But God, who called me here below,

Will be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

Than when we’d first begun.

Elenor Rigby

This is a truly beautiful song exhibiting both simplicity & complexity in its final form. See the links at the bottom of the page to see how complex it can get. I am now trying to play this song on the guitar, and possibly on the harmonica as well. I will follow this process:

Learn the Lyrics of the Song First
Learn to Sing the Song with the correct intonation & rhythm
Learn the Chords required, practicing any complex changes
Play the whole song on the guitar along with the orginal
Play and sing together
Finally make it my own

Chords: C C/E Em Em7 Em6
