This really is the most awesome of books. I had never read an illustrated novel by Shigeru Muzuki before and took a chance on this when visiting Blossom Book Shop in Begaluru, India.

First things first, this shop is just one of the most charming book shops I have come across and always full of the most amazing titles. It’s about three stories tall and probably has 1/10 or even less the area of Folyes in London, but carries probably the same number of books!

Linear Systems are systems that can be broken into parts where each part is solved independently and finally the solution can be made by the recombination (summation) of these parts.

By contrast Non-Linear systems generally cannot be split up in this way. The different components of the system depend on each other. Therefore one cannot reduce the problem to a simpler statement of the problem and usually due to combinatorial-explosion the solution space is massive and hence difficult to solve.

Jonathon Haidt is a social / moral psychologist who I didn’t know much about before buying this book. I really decided to by this book because he was referenced a few times by Jordan Perterson, who I respect really highly.

This book is about why it’s so hard for us to get along. People who devote their lives to studying something often come to believe that the object of their fascination is the key to understanding everything. played by cooking, mothering, war … even salt. This is one of those books. I study moral psychology, and I’m going to make the case that morality is the extraordinary human capacity that made civilization possible. By the end of the tour, I hope to have given you a new way to think about two of the most important, vexing, and divisive topics in human life: politics and religion. The word righteous comes from the old Norse word rettviss and the old English word rihtwis, both of which mean “just, upright, virtuous.” 3 This meaning has been carried into the modern English words righteous and righteousness, although nowadays those words have strong religious connotations because they are usually used to translate the Hebrew word tzedek. Tzedek is a common word in the Hebrew Bible, often used to describe people who act in accordance with God’s wishes, but it is also an attribute of God and of God’s judgment of people (which is often harsh but always thought to be just). I really like this series of books by Andrew Thomas, which I would really classify under speculative science. Speculative as opposed to orthodox. I like to read such works because I often find Orthodox Science (the kind of stuff that comes out of Universities) very conservative. Sometimes you just need to read material that is not fully accepted by main stream science. It keeps you very much more focused and you are forced to really think about what you believe. When reading someone like Brian Green or Laurence Krauss the tendency is for the mind to just accept the Truth as it is handed down to you.

The Ancient schools thought this unification would lie in geometry

It was shown that every Real Number could be represented as a sequence of rational numbers. And Rationals as pairs of Integers.
We can in turn show how Natural numbers can be represented by sets
Set Theory Paradoxes, there are two main types:
- Logical - Russell’s Paradox
- Semantic - Berry’s Paradox
The paradoxes arise because in Naive Set Theory we take the position that we can describe properties of an object and the decribe sets of objects based on these properties.
However certain properties lead to paradoxes
So we must ask, what are legitimate properties? How do we decribe the existence of sets.
There have been three major schools for solving these problems:

On the basis of what we have just discovered, the solution is very simple. Because of our human bias, our space is defined in terms of fermions. A fermion with mass, travelling slower than the speed of light in the x direction, needs to spin. Spin requires a plane in two dimensions, so an additional two dimensions — y and z So three dimensions arise from the fermion’s need to satisfy the rules of special relativity. And, as we define our reality in terms of fermions, our space therefore must have three dimensions, three degrees of freedom. One or two dimensions of space would not be enough as the fermion would not be able to spin. Three dimensions is the smallest number of dimensions which allows spin perpendicular to motion, thus allowing the fermion to satisfy special relativity. John Barrow explains this unique characteristic in Dimensionality:

Orwell is another great influence on my life. I first read 1984 15-20 years back and it really blew my mind, I can still remember it so clearly. Perhaps it is cliche but it it’s the truth, I cant think of many better books for a young mind.

Though it took me many years to shake of my socialistic tendencies, in retrospect this little number really gave me the tools to deal with large number tricky situations.

We are quite good at doing this with Space but I think we are not trained well at doing this with time.

Introduction Facts are like radioactivity, new facts are created & decay predictably. Knowledge also spreads with recognizable characteristics. This is important because facts do not stand indepedent of each other, they interelate and how they do that goes a long way in which we interpret the order of our environment. Facts can be defined as “individual states of knowledge awareness”. As such each fact is also inherently uncertain. Learning about how facts are created, spread and are finally destroyed will help us manage this uncertainty. Facts can be organised by how quickly they are subject to change. Imagine if you will three categories:
1. Very Slow Like Mathematical Facts
2. Middle or Mesofacts Like the Population of the World
3. Very Fast Like the latest stock prices
The Creation of Facts We often think of change happening linearly, however there is good reason to keep in mind at least a few other types, namely, exponential, cyclical, logarithmic, logistic, S-Curves or Linked logistic. Exponential growth is characterised by its doubling time and it is found that many many fields of knowledge exhibit characteristic doubling times for the rate of growth of facts within their realm. This field of study is called Scientometrics. H-index, Eurekometrics Discoveries follow a logarithmic curve as new discoveries get harder and harder. An easy heuristic to understand this is thinking about how much harder it is too discover smaller and smaller things. The equipment you need etc…
