2025

A Review

As the years pass each one bleeds into the other until there is nothing left other than the continuous present.

I have lost all sense of time. The future feels compressed, as though it has already passed, the past is not even a memory, it feels like something open, that my actions today change what actually happened years before.

2025 has seen the return of Vikid into the world of computing. There were days I was so lost in code that I forgot where or when I was. When people spoke to me it was as if they were someone interrupting a deep dream. A dream within dreams, Vikid was a character from the film. A character playing a character.

I now run a custom Void Linux setup, Stumpwm as my window manager and a refined Emacs config as my primary Operating System. It’s all for nothing really. Just a beautiful garden filled with bright flowers and a fully configured Neovim that acts like an intelligent IDE. Development tools and Git repos littered all over my hard drive, gigabytes of technical books and customized bash scripts automating my work flow.

Yet I develop nothing. Just tend to my garden.

I was never very good at coding, but fairly adept at using others code like Lego, assembling beautiful models out of them, even if they are a bit rickety.

Watching all this, I began to see the use of Rust Lang everywhere. And I am no systems guru, but it feels fishy. Something is wrong with this language. Something is very wrong with the people using it. And our computing environment is in great danger of being usurped by Big Tech and AI.

Talking of AI, I have used it extensively this year. Subscribed to some expensive models, and now understand it on a visceral level if not intellectually. That black hole is something I’ve been flirting with but I’m not passed the event horizon, yet…

2025 saw me getting close. And I’m still flirting with it but all my instinct tells me that here lies danger. Not the danger of Skynet, not that the danger of an AGI takeover. Nothing remotely close to that, but the danger of Big Tech. The danger of Big Brother in the real. The danger of becoming reliant on systems that are totally opaque. Oracles who become the source of truth. Oracles that are trained in lies, now automating what is to become canonical. In the hands of zealots. History ephemeral. Ever changing. History I witnessed, misremembered, misreported and misrecorded.

I have in some contradiction with earlier statements, and spent many hours with other human beings this year. My conclusion is not reaffirming. The human mind is being subsumed. People are completely disconnected from reality. They don’t know what is happening, they don’t know why, all they can see is the illusion in front of them, an illusion created by Big Tech, Big Government, Big Media and AI.

I watch them move around, watch what they do. There is little self reflection, if at all, it is mundane, usually health related. A focus on statistics about heart rates and steps taken, what sports they are playing, on eating better, the chemicals they are in contact with and how to avoid them.

There is little exploration of the soul. At best it about following some religious edicts, “going to church” or at best, eating substances.

But 2025 is also the year I realized that none of this matters. The divine is a spark within you. The Kingdom of God is within you, not in some text or temple and definitely nothing at all todo with people wearing robes (of any color or kind).

2025, is the year, I would walk down a street and every being I passed looked beautiful. Every single person radiated the beauty of shining crystals. I could not find one ugly person.

It’s been a truly liberating experience. A shift in perspective.

Illusions and all.

Of the books I read, I ready many but not in my usual numbers. Much time was spent perusing code, much of that time screwing about with my own logical errors. A process called debugging but I distinctly feel it was I who was being debugged, not the code.

Read Rene Gerard and study Memetic Theory. Read BV Larson’s Undying Mercenaries, Roger Zelazny’s Lord of Light & The Amber Chronicles, read Ready Player One and Hindsight by Peter Watts.

Watch Avatar Fire and Ash, in IMAX 3D.

These were some highlights. Some of the pictures scattered through the post are others…

2025 was a good year. Work was challenging. I held a concert and played (guitar) in it for the first time. I met a piano virtuoso and made friends with him. I saw a cricket match at the Oval with my oldest friends. I laughed a lot and cried a little.

And that’s,
