The Story of Reality

It’s Sunny Outside Apparently…

We think we live in a world of facts, when in fact we live in a world of stories.

You say Tomatoe and,

I say Tomatoe.

He says Potato,

while she says Potato.

Look around, Data is being beamed to you from every direction near 24/7.

And all Data is, is a representation, a hopefully faithful presentation.

Small units of Representation, which “point” to a certain presentation are called Symbols.

A Presentation that needs to be Interpreted and Regenerated.

Like the symbol ‘Red’. ‘Red’ is a symbol because it points to a color, a color that cannot be directly be expressed in words because words can never become color. Words are “sound symbols”. The color red presents in your mind upon the reading.

Since the world is essentially infinite and all representations finite, representations need to be by definition, “compressions” or “symbols” of the original “reality”.

Interpretation is the reverse process, the decompression of data. The following of symbols into mental presentations.

When I write “Pink Elephant,” the mind must follow the words, recreating the symbol, regenerating the words into pictures, sounds and feelings in your mind.

Thus there are no laws of nature, only symbolic representations, compressions that work within some given parameters when decompressed.

Newton laws work when speeds are small but fail when we speed things up. Special Relativity works when speeds are large but acceleration isn’t. Gravity works on the big and fails on the tiny.

This is the real law:

No compression truly represents reality.

The word “reality” is itself a compression, symbol pointing to something unrepresentable in the finite format.

When all we had had spoken language, the technology of writing was a gaming changing revelation.

However what could be digitized and written is only the smallest sliver of what actually out there. Listen to the word of Jack Gleason (Joffrey). The words hardly matter. It is how he says them, not what he says.

When you read the words “My God, it’s sunny outside”, it is in a highly compressed format. When your mind decompresses the words, interprets them and regenerates what has been said, it could decompress the data in a wide, in fact infinite, variety of ways.

Without the context, it is essentially meaningless, because it can adopt any meaning.

The video demonstrates this.

Furthermore what is written down can be easily manipulated by any subsequent person involved in publishing it.

When the digital age finally dawned upon us, information could spread globally at nearly the speed of light.

But what was barely understood was the information itself could be changed in transit faster than that.

Information is only as good as the trust in the persons who control it. And moreover on the persons interpreting it.

Take Wikipedia. Once such a promise of holding the worlds encyclopedic knowledge, now reduced to nonsense by a small group of people, “editors” with a clear agenda, PR firms funded by deep pockets, who have armies to change any page they wish.

The real problem however is not trust but the compression, decompression and interpretation factors themselves.

It turns out that video is practically no better than the written word. Context can be clipped, cropped, or out of focus. Videos of one event can be masquerading as events in another time and place. And actors can really act! Editors can really edit!

When we compress, we necessarily omit something. Which information is omitted cannot be ascertained by the user / interpreter. And when the interpreter decompresses the data, there is a near infinite ways to “understand” the way things can unfold.

Thus it turns out, the more well read you are, the more “educated” you are, the smarter you are, the more mislead you can be…

The more misled you probably are.

Because you think you know more, but all you really have is more compressed data, from a few “favorite” sources, that relies on your ability to decompress it faithfully.

Data that’s probably dodgy, with a decompression algorithm that’s probably very different from the original authors (who have their own agenda).

Vikid, The Purveyor of Truth.

Now that’s a story…

He was a great collector of books. A bit of a brainiac or so he thought. As his collection grew and the more he read, the greater became his ego. Simply because he “knew” more than anyone else around him. But there was a threshold, the more he started to know and the further he read and studied, the more he started to realize that he couldn’t trust any of the compressions he had previously ingested.

And later on, he realized that he couldn’t trust the decompressions either.

Until some point it all collapsed and he realized he actually “knew” nothing.

That “knowing” itself was the result of compressions. Each compression requiring a decompression. Layers of compressions on compressions, decompressions upon decompressions a few miles thick.

Not so much a “falsity” but equally having no real bearing on “reality”, as such…

Knowledge was a Story. Reconstructed each time, attached with the feeling of “I know”.

And thus he went into the Great Unknowing.

Which at first, resulted in a deep dive into Conspiracy.

Why?

Cause when you first flirt with the unknowing, the mind is not ready to accept such a circumstance. So it latches on to alternative perspectives, to satisfy the urge… The opium of “knowing”.

But it’s best not to get stuck there for too long. A couple of years or a decade is probably okay and natural.

But then you graduate and you realize the conspiracies have the same malady as the original story. That all you’re doing is creating more stories… And then thinking that you “know” them.

Finally, you let go of the story. But you can’t really let go of the story. There is always a story. You just realize what it is, and come to peace with it.

And you much more readily accept other people’s stories and let them be with their stories without try to persuade them this way or that.

The pursuit of knowledge doesn’t stop. You rather just become a Story Collector.

And you can take great joy in that.

It really doesn’t matter if it’s Sunny Outside, for that’s not the really story, those are just facts.

And That’s,
