PROLOGUE

The first Galactic Empire was falling. It had been decaying and breaking down for centuries and only one man fully realized that fact.

He was Hari Seldom the last great scientist of the First Empire, and it was he who perfected psychohistory - the science of human behavior reduced to mathematical equations.

The individual human being is unpredictable, but the reactions of human mobs, Seldon found, could be treated statistically. The larger the mob, the greater the accuracy that could be achieved. And the size of the human masses that Seldon worked with was no less than the population of all the inhabited millions of worlds of the Galaxy.

Seldon's equations told him that, left to itself, the Empire would fall and that. thirty thousand years of human misery and agony would elapse before a Second Empire would arise from the ruins. And yet, if one could adjust some of the conditions that existed, that Interregnum could be decreased to a single millennium - just one thousand years.

It was to insure this that Seldon set up two colonies of scientists that he called "Foundations." With deliberate intention, he set them up "at opposite ends of the Galaxy." The First Foundation, which centered on physical science, was set up in the fuel daylight of publicity. The existence of the other, the Second Foundation, a world of psychohistorical and "mentalic" scientists, was drowned in silence.

In The Foundation Trilogy, the story of the first four centuries of the Interregnum is told. The First Foundation (commonly known as simply "The Foundation," since the existence of another was unknown to almost all) began as a small community lost in the emptiness of the Outer Periphery of the Galaxy. Periodically it faced a crisis in which the variables of human intercourse - and of the social and economic currents of the time - constricted about it. Its freedom to move lay along only one certain line and when it moved in that direction a new horizon of development opened before it. All had been planned by Hari Seldon, long dead now.

The First Foundation with its superior science, took over the barbarized planets that surrounded it. It faced the anarchic warlords who broke away frog, a dying, empire and beat them. It faced the remnant of the Empire itself under its last strong Emperor and its last strong general - and beat it.

It seemed as though the "Seldon Plan" was going through smoothly and that nothing would prevent the Second Empire from being established or, time - and with a minimum of intermediate devastation.

But psychohistory is a statistical science. Always there is a small chance that something will go wrong, and something did - something which Hari Seldon could not have foreseen. One man, called the Mule, appeared atom nowhere He had mental powers in a Galaxy that lacked them. He could mold men's emotions and shape their minds so that his bitterest opponents were made into his devoted servants. Aries could not, would not, fight him. The First Foundation fell and Seldon's P1an seemed to lie in ruins.

There was left mysterious Second Foundation, which had been caught unprepared by the sudden appearance of the Mule, but which was now slowly working out a counterattack. Its great defense was the fact of its unknown location. The Mule sought it in order to make his conquest of the Galaxy complete. The faithful of what was left of the First Foundation sought it to obtain help.

Neither found it. The Mule was stopped first by the action of a woman, Bayta Darell and that bought enough time for the Second Foundation to organize the proper action and, with that, to stop the Mule permenently. Slowly they prepared to reinstate the Seldon Plan.

But, in a way, the cover of the Second Foundation was gone. The First Foundation knew of the second's existence, and the First did not want a future in which they, were overseen by the mentalists. The First Foundation was the superior in physical force, while the Second Foundation was hampered not only by that fact, but by being faced by a double task: it had not only to stop the First Foundation but had also to regain its anonymity.

This the Second Foundation, under its greatest "First Speaker," Preem salver, manages to do. The First Foundation was allowed to seem to win, to seems to defeat the Second Foundation, and it moved on to greater and greater strength in the Galaxy, totally ignorant that the Second Foundation still existed.

It is now four hundred and ninety-eight years after the First Foundation had come into existence. It is at the peak of its strength, but one man does not accept appearances -

Le Premier Empire galactique était en pleine décadence.

Cela faisait déjà plusieurs siècles qu'il pourrissait et s'effondrait et un homme,
un seul, en avait pleinement pris conscience.

C'était Hari Seldon, le dernier grand homme de science du Premier Empire,
le père de la psychohistoire cette science de la mise en équations mathématiques
du comportement humain.

L'homme, en tant qu'individu, demeure imprévisible mais, avait découvert Seldon,
les grandes masses humaines pouvaient être traitées statistiquement.
Plus vaste était la masse, plus grande la précision qu'on était en droit d'attendre.

Et la taille de l'échantillon sur lequel travaillait Seldon était tout bonnement
l'ensemble de la population des millions de mondes habités de la Galaxie.

Ses équations avaient révélé à Seldon que livré à lui-même l'Empire devait
s'effondrer et que s'ensuivraient pour l'humanité trente mille ans de misère
et de souffrances avant qu'un Second Empire s'élève des ruines.

Et pourtant, que l'on parvienne à influer sur certains des paramètres existants,
et la durée de l'interrègne pourrait être réduite à mille ans; un seul petit
millénaire.

Et ce fut dans ce but que Seldon mit sur pied deux colonies d'hommes de science
qu'il baptisa « Fondations ». Délibérément, il les plaça < aux extrémités opposées
de la Galaxie ».

Axée sur les sciences physiques, la Première Fondation instaurée au vu et
au su de tout le monde. En l'existence de l'autre, la Seconde Fondation,
univers de psychsilence.

revanche historiens et de « mentalistes », fut recouverte par le Dans la Trilogie
de Fondation est contée l'histoire du premier tiers de l'interrègne. La Première
Fondation (connue plus simplement sous le nom de « La Fondation», tout court.

puisque l'existence d'une autre était presque totalement méconnue) ne fut d'abord
qu'une petite communauté perdue dans le désert de l'extrême périphérie de la Galaxie.

Périodiquement, elle se voyait confrontée à une crise dominée par les variables
des rapports humains et des courants socio-économiques de l'époque.

Sa marge de manceuvre se réduisait à une ligne bien définie, et, dès qu'elle se
mouvait dans cette direction, de nouveaux horizons s'ouvraient alors devant elle.

Tout cela avait été planifié par Hari Seldon, alors depuis łongtemps disparu.
Grâce à sa supériorité scientifique, la Première Fondation conquit les planètes
barbares qui l'entouraient.

Elle affronta les seigneurs anarchiques issus de l'Empire moribond et les défit.
Elle affronta l'Empire lui-même ou ce qu'il en estait en la personne de son dernier
grand Empereur et de son dernier grand Général et les défit.

Il semblait donc que le « plan Seldon » allait appare se dérouler sans heurts et que
rien ne devaitmment empêcher l'instauration, le moment venu, du Second Empire et ce
avec un minimum de dégâts entre-temps.

Mais la psychohistoire est une science statistique. Il subsis toujours un petit
risque de voir les choses mal tourner et effectivement ce qui se produisit un événement
que Hari Seldon avait été incapable de prévoir.

Un homme nommé Mulet surgit de nulle part. Il disposait de pouvoirs mentaux dans
une Galaxie qui en était dépourvue. Il pouvait modeler les émotions des hommes et
modifier leur esprit au point que ses plus farouches ennemis devenaient ses plus
fidèles serviteurs. Les armées ne pouvaient pasne voulaient pas — ne voulaient pas -
combattre.

La Première Fondation s'effondra et le plan

Seldon semblait à jamais enfoui sous ses décombres.

Restait la mystérieuse Seconde Fondation qui avait étéprise au dépourvu par la
soudaine apparition du Mulet mais qui désormais mettait lentement en oeuvre une parade.

Le secret de son emplacement faisait sa principale défense. Le Mulet la chercha
afin de parachever sa conquête de la Galaxie. Les fidèles de ce qui restait de la
Première Fonda-

tion la cherchèrent pour obtenir de l'aide.

Mais aucun ne la trouva. Le Mulet fut d'abord arrêté par l'action d'une simple femme,
Bayta Darell, et ce délai permit à la Seconde Fondation de s'organiser en conséquence
et ainsi de stopper définitivement le Mulet.

Lentement, la Seconde Fondation se prépara à relancer le plan Seldon. Mais, en un sens,
la couverture de la Seconde Fondation avait disparu : la Première Fondation connaissait
l'existence de la Seconde et refusait d'envisager son avenir sous
la dépendance des mentalistes.

La Première Fondation avait la suprématie en matière de force physique quand la seconde
était non seulement handicapée sur ce point mais par le fait qu'elle était confrontée à
une double tâche non seulement stopper la Première Fondation
mais aussi regagner son anonymat.

C'est ce qu'elle parvint toutefois à accomplir sous la direction du plus grand de ses
« Premiers Orateurs », Preem

Palver. On laissa la Première Fondation gagner en apparence, en apparence balayer
la Seconde Fondation, et acquérir un

pouvoir croissant dans la Galaxie tout en continuant d'ignorer totalement que la
Seconde Fondation existait toujours.

Quatre cent quatre-vingt-dix-huit années ont maintenant passé depuis que la Première
Fondation a vu le jour. Elle est à résent au sommet de sa puissance mais il est un homme
qui n'accepte pas les apparences...
